Quarantäne verbindet sich für mich mit Ausnahmesituationen, wie ich sie von Krankenhausbesuchen kenne. Verbunden mit der Neugier über die ungewöhnlichen Gerüche, Geräusche und Farben war auch immer eine unbestimmte Furcht, den fremdartigen Vorgängen vollkommen hilflos ausgeliefert zu sein. Den Zwiespalt des Zustands finde ich in dem Satz aus Klaus Walters Eröffnungsrede treffend beschrieben: „Quarantäne bedeutet Abgrenzung des Einzelnen gegenüber einer Masse, eine Isolation in beide Richtungen und bietet in der Verbannung, in der Krankheit auch eine letzte Rückzugsmöglichkeit”.

At the invitation of the Kunstverein, I have set up a 2 x 3 meter cell that could correspond to the living space of a sick person, in the chapel of the former Leprosarium. The fenced-in room, with table, bed, chair and cupboard, is permeable for views from the in- and outside. Around it circle distorted pictures of people who represent various wish fulfilments.
Quarantine is associated for me with exceptional situations, such as those I know from hospital visits. Connected with curiosity about the unusual smells, noises and colours, was also always an undefined anxiety of being totally helpless when subjected to unfamiliar goings-on. I find that the ambiguity of that state is accurately described in the following sentence from Klaus Walter´s opening speech: „Quarantine means to mark the borders of the individual in the face of a crowd. It means an isolation in both directions and also offers in the exile, that is in the illness, a last option of withdrawal.”
